Dr. Mainak Sarkar was a 38 year-old former mechanical engineering Ph.D. student of William Klug. [1] Sarkar immigrated to the United States of America in 2001 on a foreign student visa from India.[33] He was granted lawful permanent resident status in May 2014.[33]

UCLA Shooting (June 1, 2016)

Sarkar was confirmed by law enforcement on June 2nd, 2016 to be the killer of William Klug during the UCLA Shooting. Sarkar used a 9-millimeter pistol to shoot the professor in his office in Boelter Hall. Sarkar then immediately killed himself in Klug's 4th floor office. [23] UCLA professor Chris Lynch is credited for locking the door to Klug's office immediately after hearing two gunshots so that Sarkar could not engage other potential victims.[44]

Sarkar wrote a blog article describing his hatred of Klug [4] [3] The blog article was deleted but Google cached it and it was thus retrievable. [20] [21] On March 10, in the blog post, Sarkar called the professor “a sick person” who stole his work. “I was this guy’s Ph.D. student,” he wrote. “We had personal differences. He cleverly stole all my code and gave it [to] another student. He made me really sick.” [3]

Sarkar also killed his estranged wife Ashley Hasti in Minnesota leading up to the UCLA Shooting. They had broken up and had stopped being friends on FacebookAshley's family members said Sarkar was absent from family gatherings, and that Hasti had kicked Sarkar out of the house, and they had been living separately.[25][11]

It is believed Sarkar immediately moved himself across the country via car from Minnesota to UCLA to conduct the murder of William Klug before authorities could discover Sarkar's crimes. [25]

Sarkar had a kill list with three people on it William KlugAshley Hasti, and an unknown UCLA professor who was not killed. After the killings, Sarkar had left a note stating his address in Minnesota and to look after his cat. [26]

Police found his car on June 3rd, 2016, described as a 2003 gray Nissan Sentra with Minnesota license plate 720KTW. The car was found in the Century City area of Los Angeles, California at 11300 block of Washington Place, west of Sawtelle Boulevard. [24] [42]

Sarkar worked as an engineering analyst at Endurica LLC until August 2014. From 2005-2007 he worked as a software developer at Lucid Technologies. From 2002-2003 he worked as a research assistant a the University of Texas at Arlington. From 2000-2001 He worked for Infosys Ltd. in Bangalore, India[2]  [7]

Dr. Mainak Sarkar graduated from UCLA with a PhD in mechanical engineering in 2013. For his PhD Dr. Sarkar took courses in Fracture Mechanics, Computational, Solid Mechanics, Finite element Analysis, Theory of Shells and Plates. While at UCLA  he worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses (Finite Element Analysis, Statics and Dynamics, Applied Mathematics) in Mechanical Engineering. [7]

In 2005, he graduated from Stanford University with a Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2000 he graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. [7]

Immigration Status

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement made the following statement to the conservative news outlet, Breitbart about Mainak Sarkar's status as an immigrant in the United States of America[33]

"Department of Homeland Security databases indicate that Mr. Sarkar was in the United States lawfully at the time of his death, having been granted lawful permanent residence in May 2014. According to DHS databases, Mr. Sarkar originally came to the U.S. in 2001 on a foreign student visa to pursue graduate studies. DHS’ electronic records show he obtained three student visas between 2001 and 2008 to engage in masters and doctoral programs in the U.S." [33]

I don't know where to put this but it says above he got his PhD in 2011 but his dissertation for *partal* fulfillment of his PhD was not submitted until 2013, so I think the earlier date is off. Maybe 2013, but it says partial so I'm not sure.

I know how to edit but I wasn't actually sure if 2013 was the legit date, which is why I didn't do it. I do not know him, but I will say this: Wouldn't he be coming forward and saying, hey guys, it's not me!!

The silence is deafening. Which kind of tells you something.

I had never heard of this site until today but I love it! And you're so right about Wikipedia. I've tried adding stuff. It's just nuts.

BTW, I'm thinking more about this: he writes the post mid-March. He says knowing your enemy is easy, it's the people you think are your friends you have to watch. So, something must have happened in that time frame that set him off.

hey, just wanted to add another hunch -- Sarkar was Klug's student for 7 years --  2006 (based on info from Klug's website) to 2013 (his dissertation filed at UCLA). Yet I found only ONE article they wrote together (based on Klug's Google Scholar profile). That is HIGHLY unusual. Moreover, Klug published plenty with his other students
Also Sarkar LinkedIn states that he was at UCLA 2007-2011 and started working in a private company in August 2012. Sounds like he fudged the dates to make it look like he finished in reasonable 4 years, and instead left PhD to work in the industry because of sour relationship with his advisor. It must have been pretty dramatic...
PS. not like i'm a phd student at ucla or anything...

Early reports point to a 6 foot tall white male, and law enforcement suggest it was a student unhappy with his grade. How does this translate to a brown guy who graduated in 2013?
Remember the Boston marathon suspect incorrectly identified as Sunil Thripati on Reddit? The missing student from Brown University who had nothing to do with the bombing?  Please be careful in putting these allegations out there without all the facts. All you have to go by is a blog post.

Perhaps Adam Lanza flew out from Sandy Hook to create another fake event to promote the gun control agenda.  After all, if all the billions of guns in the U.S. had been confiscated this event would not have happened would it?  Doesn't the Kook capital of the world have the most restrictive gun laws in the country?  However, if it is really true that professor Klug is really dead, unlike the lies about the Sandy Hook victims, that is a tragedy.  He appears to have been a good person and scholar.  Read the free book "Nobody Died at Sandy Hook" which was banned from Amazon after selling about 500 copies in a month.  However about 19 other books sustaining the official lies were not banned.  This  was a fake event to promote the gun control agenda.  Why not call Janet your new president to clarify?  On a hot mic she was overheard, "Let's get out of here" at a regents meeting when students wanted to talk.  Or this event could be a reprisal for the theft of Veterans Land by selfish arrogant outlaws at UCLA and brentwood.

The theory that the strained relationship between him and his PhD advisor made him stay too long in the school is generally what lot of PhD students gripe about. When I graduated 20 years ago already there were number of PhD lifers at that school, who stayed on for way too long (especially foreigners) because they didn't know how to get out of the "bondage" and felt a level of hopelessness in their relationship with the professors who kept them on projects for many years for good or bad reasons. The fact that they were foreigners in US meant they couldn't get jobs without graduating or had to get jobs with their masters to break the relationship. Its complicated and if the guy already had mental health issues, such a strain could make it worse.

Well, some unidentified source from UCLA said the student was sub-par and professor bent over backwards to help the student. The facts do not actually support this. In a career spanning 14 years, William Klug has produced only 6 PhD dissertations with him as primary advisor. This is a major indication that very few people wanted to work with him or the prof was struggling to find students/grants to support. Second, with a career of 13 - 14 years, anyone would have been promoted to full professorship, which is not the case with William Klug. His PhD advisees (from Electronic Theses database, ProQuest) are:
    Ma Lin, graduated 2009
    Maire Gibbons, 2008
    Ankush Agarwal, 2012
    Mo Bai, 2012
    Shankarjee Krishnamoorthi, 2013
    Miank Sarka, 2013

Only 6 students in 13 years? That is low rate of scholarship by standards of high repute institute like UCLA, that too in Engineering field.
Was Klug tenured? Why such low number of students?
Deepest condolences to William Klug's family. But, this whole thing raises several questions.

Another important aspect is that a majority of his PhD students are international students. Only one was American, I guess. This again raises strong suspicion whether his lab was a sweat shop. In fact, students are advised to check about composition of lab when joining a lab. Only international students in a lab is a sign of danger.
