Zachary Rapp-Rovan

Zachary Rapp-Rovan

Zachary Rapp-Rovan, better known known Hooks, is a Canadian Electronic Music Producer and DJ based in Toronto. He is one half of the electronic music duo, Zeds Dead.

Early Life

Rapp-Rovan grew up in Toronto to a musical family.

In 2004, he met Dylan Mamid and they bonded over their love for classic 90's hip-hop. They first met in Dylan's garage where people would hang out and listen to music. Dylan asked Zach to do some graffiti inside the wall where they realized they were both into production and the same music.

Mass Productions

Rapp-Rovan and Mamid first started to produce music under the name Mass Productions and released an independent album that included instrumentals that were heavily influenced by 90's hip-hop.

It was released in 2007 and was the only release under the Mass Productions name.

Zeds Dead Beginnings

In 2009, Rapp-Rovan and Mamid decided to start creating electronic music under the name Zeds Dead.

They initially found a niche audience on Myspace. They played their first live set at The Social in Toronto on June 11, 2009.

In 2009 Zeds Dead founded a weekly party called Bassmentality in the basement of the Toronto bar 751.

The party was intended as a venue for new DJs to play, unrestricted by concert promoters.

In the summer of 2010 Bassmentality moved from the basement of 751 and into Toronto's Wrongbar.

Bassmentality became a mainstay in the Toronto dubstep scene and featured weekly performances by its founders Zeds Dead and The Killabits, as well as rotating slots acts based locally and from around the world.

Over the four years that the event existed, it hosted early performances from several now-acclaimed artists such as Skrillex, Borgore, Nero, Camo & Krooked, Bare Noize, and Bar 9, among others.

Music Releases

Zeds Dead self-released their first track together, "Journey of a Lifetime", for free in 2009.

On December 6th 2010, Zeds Dead released their first EP Rudeboy under San City High Records. Two years later, they released Adrenaline under Inspected Records. Zeds Dead would release a number EPs off Mad Decent including Victor EP, Hot Sauce, and Somewhere Else. They also released The Living Dead off Ultra Records.

Graffiti Artistry

Rapp-Rovan has been into creating graffiti art since he was in high school.

During that time, he discovered his peers who were into it and they formed different crews that would paint all over their city.

Some influential crews that affected Rapp-Rovan included HSA, BSM, AU, and HFB.

He painted with the BR crew in his early days but has since done most of his paintings with his homie VEKTR.

Painting under the name Rezone, he has painted graffiti all over the world as a result of touring with Zeds Dead.

His favorite object to paint are freight trains.
