Yolande Mabika is an Olympic Judoist.
Early Life and Career
Mabika was a child when the violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo broke out.
While running from attackers a helicopter picked her up and brought her back to the capitol. She was placed in an orphanage and began learning Judo.
In 2013 she went to Rio de Janeiro for the World Championships of Judo and ran away from her coach. She told the authorities about how she would be caged up, have her passport taken from her, and given reduced food. She ended up becoming a stateless person living in Brazil.
In June 2016, when the International Olympic Committee created a Team Refugee for athletes with no nation, she was chosen as one of ten athletes to join the team. She will be competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Middleweight Judo. [1]
