Yang Fan Yun

Yang Fan Yun (born 2001) is a smart young student who went to Macleans College who is a top debater and accomplished musician. He was considered and argued[2] to be New Zealand smartest teenager[2]. Yang received numerous awards and scholarships some of which were his 5 Outstanding Scholarships in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Economics and Statistics and 5 Scholarships in Agricultural and Horticultural Science, Calculus, English, Geography, and Health and Physical Education. "I took 10 scholarship exams last year and I was fortunate enough to win all 10, including five outstanding scholarships," Yang told TVNZ1's Sunday programme as at the year he won scholarships for all the exams he wrote.

Personal Achievements

Yang Fan was a School Prefect, Academic Captain, Peer Support Leader at Macleans College, and was named school Dux in 2018. He was a member of the New Zealand Biology Olympiad Team that went to Africa, working on a dig in the Rift Valley and completing a study in Lake Malawi. He also won a gold medal at the Economics Olympiad in Moscow, gaining the top overall score in the Economics section. He was a cellist in the school Symphony Orchestra, sang in the boys’ choir, and was a key member of the school and Auckland region debating teams.[10]

List of some of his key achievement have included: New Zealand’s Top Scholar , Acceptance into Stanford University , Membership of the New Zealand Biology Olympiad Team , Success in national and international economics competitions including a gold medal at the International Economics Olympiad and so on.[6]

Educational Background

After finishing college though he was working Wednesdays as a research assistant at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland, he moved to study Economics at the University of Auckland. Fortunately, Yang Fan was accepted into Stanford University to study Economics, Human Biology, and Public Policy later this year which he later chose to study Computer Science and MS&E (Management Science and Engineering). He plans to pursue medical research and work to improve equal access to affordable healthcare through policy making.

There are few topics that don't interest Yun, but for the moment he is focusing his energy into economics, biology and chemistry, with a dream to improve access to affordable healthcare.[8]

Representations

Yang represented his institution in various competitions and a list of a few are: Russia when he travelled as part of the New Zealand team at the first International Economics Olympiad, Tanzania representing New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad, Economics Olympiad in Moscow, Tanzania and Malawi to carry out ecological research, Global Tourism Summit in Honolulu, Hawaii.

[4] When asked about his achievements, he simply said, the secret is hard work with a bit of luck as well as taking a keen interest in different things and being aware of various opportunities available.
