Valentín Trujillo (pianist)

Valentín Trujillo (pianist)

Valentín Trujillo Sánchez, also known as "Maestro Valentín" or "Tío Valentín" ( Santiago, May 1933), is a Chilean Pianist and arranger of popular music, who has stood out for his participation in various television programs, such as Pin Pon, El mundo del profesor Rossa and Sábado Gigante, and who has more than seventy years of experience as a musician.[1]

Life

He is one of the five children of miner Juan de Dios Trujillo and elementary school teacher Clementina Sánchez, and the younger brother of popular bolero, ranchera and corrido singer Fernando Trujillo.

He completed his primary studies at the Patronato de San Antonio and the Escuela República Argentina in Santiago, and later completed his secondary studies at the historic Liceo Valentín Letelier in Santiago.

He learned to play the piano at the age of 4 in a self-taught way.

In 1940, at the age of 7, he entered to study music, harmony and composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Santiago, where he stayed until 1952.

Musical career

His career changed drastically in 1962, when he became the conductor of the TV program Sábads Gigante on Channel 13, together with the popular host Don Francisco. He also participated in the children's program Pin Pon together with the actor Jorge Guerra, a program that was suspended by the military dictatorship in 1974.

After the internationalization of the program Sábado Gigante, he moves with his friend Don Francisco to Miami, United States, where he begins a dizzying career with the popular animator that lasts until 2005, where he retires. He also participates in the children's program El Mundo del Profesor Rossa (Professor Rossa's World) for several years, until it is cancelled.

In addition to his participation in television programs, he has participated in various concerts with Cuban composer Enrique Chia and Chilean jazzman Cristián Cuturrufo.

He has won several times the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, and has received important awards such as the one given in 1992 by the Miami Critics Society for his contribution to music for a section of his program Sábado Gigante. In 2000, he received the career award from the Chilean government and in 2002 the "Valentin Trujillo Scholarship" was instituted for low-income students with great musical abilities.

In 2004 he made a record with Cuturrufo called Jazz de Salón, venturing into a style that is not very common in him.

Thanks to its success, in 2007 he made the album Un año más with Ángel Parra Trío, and at the same time a documentary about the making of the album and the intergenerational communication of Chilean musicians.

In 2010 he was honored at the LI International Song Festival of Viña del Mar, where he was awarded three prizes by the public; silver torch, gold torch and silver gull.

On the occasion, he performed music by Víctor Jara, Los Jaivas, Frank Sinatra, George Gershwin and Queen, which he interpreted together with his children and grandchildren, and received a televised greeting from Miami from his friend and colleague Don Francisco.

In 2013 the Catalonia publishing house published a biography entitled Valentín Trujillo.

Una vida en la música, written by Dario Oses.

In May 2016 he was named an illustrious son of the city of Santiago.

He's been close to the left all his life.

He took part in the X CUT record in 1968, edited by the Young Communists and was a leader of the musicians' union.

In March 2017, he joined the Chilean Communist Party.

Besides music, another of his interests is boxing, becoming certified as a judge within that discipline.

On February 17, 2018, he participated as a boxing commentator in a broadcast by TVN, along with Pedro Carcuro and Rayén Araya.[2]
