Trilogy of Swordsmanship

Trilogy of Swordsmanship (群英會) is a 1972 Hong Kong wuxia anthology film. Yueh Feng, Cheng Kang and Chang Cheh each directed one of the three short film episodes. The film was produced by Runme Shaw and Run Run Shaw for Shaw Brothers.[1][5]

Summary

Episode 1: The Iron Bow

Master Shi is in love with Ying Ying, but she is not interested.

He approaches her family to ask for her hand in marriage.

Ying Ying's late father left an iron bow with instructions that whoever can lift the bow and shoot an arrow from it can have the hand of his daughter.

Master Shi fails at the task, but a passer-by embarrasses him by doing it easily.

Master Shi becomes angry and Ying Ying and her family must defend themselves from the trouble he causes.

Episode 2: The Tigress

A high-priced courtesan, Shih Chung Yu is in a love affair with General Wang. Shih Chung Yu's affections are highly sought after, most notably by one bandit, Pang Xun.

The General is sentenced to death for defying an order from Minister Li and Shih Chung Yu persuades the minister to stay the General's execution if she can deliver the notorious bandit Pang Xun to him.

Episode 3: White Water Strand

This story focuses on the sons and daughter of the bandits of Liang Shan Mountain.

The bandits rescue one of their own from a public execution.

A passer-by attempts to assist the guards but switches allegiance mid-way through.

He is captured and also sentenced to death and the bandits form a plan to rescue their new friend.

Production and release

All three episodes of Trilogy of Swordsmanship were shot on 35mm color film and feature Mandarin dialogue on a mono audio soundtrack. The Shawscope cinematographic process was used in production and the film's total runtime is 108 minutes. The film premiered on 5 November 1972 in Hong Kong.[2]
