Toya Graham is a mother of 5, and a grandmother of 1.
Baltimore Riots
Nicknamed "Mom of the Year" in 2015, she caught public eye on April 27, 2015 when she was videotaped confronting her son, Michael Singleton, with a series of slaps — just as he was poised to throw rocks at police officers by Mondawmin Mall.
[8]It was one of the main highlights of the 2015 Baltimore protests, which were related to Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old man who died as a result of injuries sustained while in police custody.
The hashtag #BaltimoreMom trended on Twitter.
Graham knows first-hand about the violence that plagues her West Baltimore neighborhood. In August 2014 she heard gunshots and went outside her home, where she found a dying gunshot victim at the 4700 block of Wilern Ave.; she spoke with ABC News about the incident. [7]
The House Fire
On August 13, 2016, she was in the news again after her house got destroyed from a kitchen fire.
[2]She found out from her daughter (via FaceTime) while working a double shift.
Michael, who was 17 at the time, was at home making chicken tenders.
He left the kitchen to use the bathroom and a fire ignited over the stove.
"I came in the kitchen and it was real smoky from the pan," he said.
"Then there were flames coming from the pot.
I grabbed a jug of water and threw it on the grease.
And it started bursting out in more flames."
No one was hurt.
Her family is now displaced and is living in a hotel for the time being.
They had lived in that house since April 2016.
The family has established a GoFundMe page.
[3]The American Red Cross has provided them with money for the family to live in two hotel rooms while they wait to learn the fate of their home.
Graham has continued to work double shifts as a caregiver at a Roland Park assisted living home.
