Background

This is an art piece by Torey.
Torey Thornton was born in Macon, Georgia and ever since he was a toddler he had a gift for art. As early as 4 years old he started engaging with drawings. He later had the experience of doing paintings and sculptures. In high school, he used painting with oil paint more properly.
Art was never option for Thorton until he had to apply for college.
After seeking to understand the art world and the history of artists, he began to see it as a semi-viable life option.
His interest has always been in creating, and for Thorton, there was no way he would ever stop doing that.
He attended the Cooper Union in a full tuition scholarship.
Thornton creates mixed-media paintings, exploring the textural possibilities of spray and acrylic paint, as well as collaged found objects, on surfaces such as paper, wood panels, and other substrates.
While his paintings frequently contain figurative elements, the abstract motifs of his compositions simultaneously retain the suggestion of recognizable forms.
His work thus oscillates between legibility and abstraction, resulting in a tension that confuses our interpretation of the picture plane and the arrangement of forms.
His paintings have been at galleries around the country, including: Dallas Museum of Art, Hammer Museum, Albright-knox, and Birmingham Museum of Art.
In 2017, his work will be included in the Whitney Biennial from March 17 - June 11 at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
