Tolani Otedola
Tolani Otedola is a Nigerian song writer and singer. She is the first daughter of billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola and the step sister to DJ Cuppy a renowned Nigerian musical artist. Tolani’s story with music started at childhood. In an interview she revealed that music had always been an integral part of her family, in which the lyrics of greats like Fela Kuti and Patra were very popular. [3]
Tolani Otedola had her primary education in Lagos at Grange School, Ikeja.
She then moved to Kwara state where she had her secondary education at Adesoye College, Offa.
Like many of her siblings, she left Nigeria for the United Kingdom and studied Psychology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Perhaps due to her passion for music and also the fact that she was a part of a music band in the University of St. Andrews, she bagged a diploma in Music and Master Performance from London’s Tech Music Schools.[4]
Style of Music
Tolani’s brand of music is predominantly afrobeat, a genre which combines elements of West African musical styles like highlife, fuji, funk and sometimes American jazz.
However, Tolani believes her afrobeat is deeper, with a dose of western influence.
She is also a huge fan of the likes of Davido, Wizkid, and Niniola.[5]
Journey Into Music
Sometime In October 2017, Tolani had her premier musical showcase in Nigeria.
The event which took place at the Terra Kulture Arena, in Victoria Island, Lagos attracted a host of top players in the music industry and unsurprisingly, Femi Otedola, her father. She was also joined on stage by the likes of Dr SID, Don Jazzy, Funbi, Ikon, Tiwa Savage and Skales.[6]
Some of her popular songs include her debut single Tenderoni featuring Skales which was released in 2018; Ba Mi Lo featuring Reekado Banks, Liar, and Maybe Baby all of which were released in 2017. In July 2020, Tolani released another single titled Badman. [7]
