The Sand Fire (Santa Clarita July 2016)

The Sand Fire started on Friday, July 22, 2016.

It was first reported at 2 PM.

As of Saturday, it is 10% contained.

The fire has largely burned in areas without many homes, but winds are expected to shift Saturday afternoon from the northwest to the southwest, which could drive the blaze closer to the Sand Canyon neighborhood in the city of Santa Clarita, California.

The fireโ€™s rapid growth has been fueled by excessive heat, low humidity, extreme dry fuels that have not burned for several decades, and very rugged terrain.

Evacuations have been taking place since Saturday, July 23rd.

More than 11,000 acres have been scorched.

[4]By Sunday, July 24th more than 20,000 acres have been burnt and 25,000 homes are projected to be destroyed.
