The Rather Prize is a nonprofit organization founded by veteran journalist Dan Rather and his grandson Martin Rather with the stated goal of "improving Texas education, one idea at a time." [2] The Prize offers teachers, students, and administrators a $10,000 grant to create and implement ideas to improve Texas's educational system, determined by a public vote. Dan Rather has stated that he founded the Rather Prize as a result of being "inspired by his grandson’s desire to improve society by strengthening schools". [3]

Application Process

Applicants are required to submit a brief writeup of their idea, along with optional "additional materials" (images, videos, mixed media) on the Rather Prize website for consideration by Rather Prize staff. After applications have been reviewed, the Rather Prize team shortlists ten finalists and opens them up to a public vote. Finally, the Rather Prize announces the winner (in 2017, the winner was announced at SXSWedu). [2]

According to the Rather Prize, the 2017 Rather Prize had over 100 applicants and 15,000 votes cast during the public consideration period. [2]
