Terryanne Chebet (age 41 years) is the founder and CEO of Keyara organics. She has also worked as the host of Kenya’s leading Business News magazine, Citizen Business Centre, and has worked in key financial journalism institutions such as CNBC Africa, CCTV Africa and National Broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation. Chebet is also a moderator, poem writer and speaker, having facilitated key national and state business and economic events. is a Media and Communications professional with more than 15 years’ experience in Media practice, Media Leadership and Management. She has vast experience in Broadcast & Digital Media and currently heads Kenya’s only 24-hour Business News Channel, Metropol TV, as the General Manager, where she hosts a flagship TV show, The Capital Point.[1]
Early Life
Chebet is the middle child in a family of five siblings, Chebet was born in 1979 in Kitale to a curator father working at the National Museums of Kenya in Kitale while her mother was a housewife. Chebet spent her childhood in Kitale in the North Rift. Like many rural families in Kenya, her family's source of livelihood came from farming and her father's earnings. Life would later take a drastic turn when her father and main bread winner, was injured in a road accident.
Her mother had to step up and struggle to provide the basics including including taking them through school.
"I went to Kitale Primary School which was a colonial institution.
We did not have a television set, so I never aspired to be a television journalist.
Instead, I wanted to be a lawyer"
In her high school days, she was also very active in drama something that set her up for a career in front of the screen.
Education
Terryanne Chebet went to Primary and High School in Kitale.
From 2000 – 2002, she studied French level-2 at Alliance Française in Nairobi.
From 2001 – 2004 she attended the School of Information & Advertising for her Diploma in TV & Radio production, Public Relations and Advertising.
From 2016 – 2018, Terryanne Chebet studied IBA – International Business Adminstration- Marketing at the United States International University Africa
Career
Between 2002 – 2004, Chebet was an actress at Phoenix Players. She used to juggle between the Phoenix Theatre, School and work at KBC. These were among the most enjoyable of her days, She was an actress for several plays and my most favourite - musicals, though she never played the lead role in any play.
She became a News Anchor, Television producer & Director at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, working between September 2002 to February 2007. She hosted news on the National Broadcaster as well as produced and directed various TV shows such as Kids Unlimited and Code 254.
Between September 2006 – March 2007, she was a Client Service Executive at Express Advertising in charge of Client relations.
While at Express DDB Kenya, she Created communication & branding proposals for clients .
Advised clients on advertising and publicity trends .
She also engaged the media on PR strategies for clients as she equally ensured a seamless relationship between clients and agency .
She was also at the hem of briefing creative team on clients ideas & presenting complete work to clients .
Some of these Clients included Bank of Africa Group, Standard Chartered Bank and Kenya Wine Agencies Limited.
From March 2007 – August 2010 she was a reporter and also a Producer at CNBC Africa. She had series of Interviews with CEO’s, business leaders, stock brokers and analysts on latest market and economic trends .
She was the predominant on-screen face of the East African Bureau, responsible for promoting and selling the positive image of CNBC Africa with people from inside and outside the company.
From November 2010 – February 2012 she served as an Associate editor and Business News presenter at Citizen TV. Created Strategy for a new business show - The Citizen Business Centre .
She was retrenched from Citizen TV.
According to Chebet, her retrenchment came as a complete surprise to her and after news of her dismissal reached her, she revealed it broke her down.
“I was sure there was no way I could be retrenched...I went straight to my room, locked it and cried.
Unajua ile crying ya sauti ya ushago?”[5]
Between 2010 to 2011, Chebet served as the Head of Sponsorship Committee of the Kenya Women in Film & TV with the task of Proposing funding models and opportunities.
From November 2011 – February 2013, Terryanne Chebet was a Business News Anchor at CCTV News International in Nairobi. She was a TV host for ‘Bizz Africa” China Central Television’s flagship business program filmed in Nairobi, with live markets crossings to Johannesburg, Washington and London.
Terryanne Chebet was the Chief Executive Officer of Fanaka Television , Nairobi, between April 2018 to March 2019 .
She was involved in the re-branding of the TV station .
She was actively involved in hiring of key managers & support staff & Capacity building .
She was in-charge of the brand building for both online & traditional advertising platforms .
She also was involved in commissioning content and leading in-house teams on content production and created revenue channels for Fanaka TV.
In 2019, Chebet became the General Manager Metropol TV Kenya .
She is in charge of the Running the station’s day-to-day operations including news-gathering, program development and production, broadcast engineering, quality control, sales, marketing.
The undertaking of research and analysis about viewer preferences and market trends to predict market trends and making programming decisions in conjunction with directors, production staff and on-air talent.
She also is involved in establishing and implementing organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures.
as well as developing, managing the station’s budget and implementing sales and marketing plans.
She is equally incharge of designing, establishing and maintaining an organizational structure, work ethic and staffing to effectively accomplish the station’s goals and objectives, overseeing recruitment and promotions, training, supervision, and evaluation of all staff.
Terryanne Chebet is the founder and currently the CEO of Scarlet Digital Advertising Agency [3], a company specializing in Digital (Web Development, SEO, Blogging ) & Social Media, Marketing Communications, Content Creation, Public Relations and Brand Strategy.
She founded the company in August 2012.
She later sold a 50% stake to her business partner Emily Njagi who is now the managing director of the company.
"I noticed that there was a lot of workload that I could not have managed alone.
I felt that I needed someone to take over the daily management of the company and this has scaled up the performance of the firm"
Keyara Organics
Terryanne Chebet is the founder of Keyara Organics[4].
She founded the organization after an unsuccessful search for locally-made organic products to manage her daughter’s eczema.
Keyara Organics is a natural skincare company with a soul and a real passion for African ingredients.
Her goal was to create something unique and effective.
"After all the discussions, and years of back and forth discussions into the wee hours of the morning, I found my space.
I wanted to create something that was authentic, beautiful and African in its mould natural and most importantly, globally competitive"
Сhebet is the team leader of Keyara.
She has a small team that handles business development, packaging and marketing.
She has outsourced the production of Keyara products to a manufacturer in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.
Her goal is to see the brands stocked and sold in outlets around the world.
The brands are currently sold in select chemists.
She is currently negotiating with various outlets to have them sell Keyara products.
"Our products are 80% natural.
We are currently developing a men's shower gel.
Our biggest challenge in this business is packaging and sourcing for the raw materials which we import from USA and China"
Chebet admits that self-doubt is one of the key challenges that women entrepreneurs face in Kenya.
However, looking back, she has no regrets.
For her, success an entrepreneur is being able to create jobs.
