After Goldsmith and Blake Mills parted ways, Taylor Goldsmith started a new folk rock band called Dawes. He named the band after his grandfather, Dawes Lafayette Goldsmith. Wylie Gelber (a former bassist of Simon Dawes) and Griffin Goldsmith (Taylor's younger brother and a former drummer of Simon Dawes) joined as the band's inaugural members; they also added Tay Strathairn as the band's keyboardist.
The group debuted in 2009 and have since released six albums.
One of their music videos, "Roll with the Punches” stars Mandy Moore.
