Meet 2011 Student Freedom Rider Tariq Meyers
Tariq was raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Meyers attended Ithaca College as a Martin Luther King scholar and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Politics. He was also involved in several student organizations, including the Student Government Association, the African-Latino Society, Brothers-4-Brothers.
In addition, he was elected as a sole-student representative to Ithaca College's Board of Trustees.
From 2012 to 2014, he served on the 'Campus Life & Community' and 'Enrollment & Communications' committees.
As a result of his community efforts, he received a Campus Life & Community award.
Career
Greenling Institute
From 2014 to 2015, Tariq served as an Economic Equity Fellow at The Greenlining Institute in Berkeley, California. There, he helped support a coalition of 100 community-based organizations - many of which were minority and women-owned businesses - and helped lead resistance to bank mergers and acquisitions that could harm communities of color. Ultimately, he called for greater inclusiveness and transparency from a policy standpoint. [16]
Lyft
In September 2015, Tariq Meyers was hired by Lyft to work for their Government Relations team. He started off as a Community Affairs Organizer in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was eventually promoted to Community Affairs Manager, where he worked with public policy managers to help develop community engagement strategies. He ran statewide public affairs for California, New York, Illinois and Massachusetts.
In September 2016, Tariq Meyers became Lyft's first Head of Inclusion & Diversity.
While serving the position, he created its first ever Gender Inclusion and Affirmation Policy and has made sure initiatives are being measured through data.
In addition, he helped Lyft hold unconscious bias trainings and launch campaigns to donate to non-profit organizations (including the HRC).
His Gender Incusion and Affirmation Policy specifically ensured an inclusive environment for transgender people, as well.
Awards & Accomplishments
In 2017, Meyers was listed as one of Forbes' 30 Under 30 for the 'Consumer Technology' category.
