Symone Marshall
Symone Marshall was the 22 year old mother of a 3 year old girl. She had currently moved from Detroit, Michigan to Houston, Texas to save up money to buy an apartment and later bring over her daughter.
Car Accident
Symone borrowed a car from a friend and drove with another passenger, a female friend Amanda Arnold. She crashed along I-45 near Huntsville, Texas after allegedly being run off the road by another car. During the crash Symone's vehicle rolled over multiple times.
Investigators say both women refused medical treatment and ended up under arrest when troopers found cocaine in their car.
They were arrested in the Walker County Jail in Huntsville, Texas on drug charges and Marshall was also charged for not providing identification.
Arnold bonded out the next day, but Marshall couldn't make her $5,000 bond and spent the next two weeks in Prison and in pain according to her family.
Death
Symone died after suffering seizure at the Walker County Jail in Huntsville, Texas. Although She had been seen by doctors in the jail she had not been taken to a hospital. Her sister called asking if Symone could be sent to a hospital since Symone had blacking out and suffering from other injuries from the car accident.
According to Symone's sister Honey Marshall "She (Symone) said her head was hurting really bad, her exact words, her head was hurting, she had a lump on her head, and her eyes were hurting, she was very sensitive to light and she kept blacking out and stuff, I asked her did they take you to the hospital she said no."
The sister says she also called the jail and asked for her sister to be taken to the hospital, but to no avail.
On May 10, 2016 Marshall had a seizure in her cell. Texas Sheriff Clint McRae says it was captured on jail surveillance video who said in the video"(Symone) takes a drink of water, lays back starts having more of a convulsive incident," he said. Shortly after being taken to the hospital was pronounced dead at Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
"She had the opportunity to see nurse and doctor and never revealed any medical conditions," McRae
The sheriff denies any allegations of wrongdoing by his department and says Marshall never asked for medical attention while in custody.
"Our department has handled this case by the book, we're not going to end up like the Sandra Bland case," McRae said.
McRae says he asked the Texas Rangers to get involved in the case as part of standard procedure.
A Go Fund Me page was created by Symone's sisters Toni Pruitt & Honey Marshall to raise money for her funeral.
