Steve McElvene was a 20-year-old basketball center for the Dayton Flyers basketball team at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio.
Steve attended New Haven High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
McElvene had been at the University of Dakota for two seasons.
He sat out the 2014-15 season as a NCAA partial qualifier but practiced with the team during the season.
Last year was his first season.
He set a record for blocks for the Dayton Flyers with 55 blocks.
Steve averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
McElevene sat out his freshman season in 2014-2015 at the University of Dayton due to academics but worked to improve his grades.
At 6-foot-11, he arrived at Dayton weighing over 300 pounds but trained hard and lost 60 lbs to begin the 2015-16 season listed at 268.
Death
Steve McElvene died on May 12, 2016 at his family’s home in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The cause of death is believed to be from an enlarged heart.
McElvene had just visited New Haven High School earlier this week to speak to a class of academically at-risk students, relaying how he was able to turn his life around.
