Smudge (Meme Cat)
Smudge (Meme Cat)
Smudge is a white-furred Canadian cat who stole the internet's heart with his appearance in the Woman Yelling At Cat meme. [1]
Personal Life
Six-year old Smudge was adopted by Miranda Stillabower in Ottawa, Canada. She was expecting a kitten after answering a Facebook ad, but instead found a full grown cat in a rusty cage. She took him home right away and quickly fell in love with him. [2]
Smudge has three siblings: cats named Valiant and Pippin, and a dog named Aria.
Smudge got his name from a grey spot that he had on his head which eventually disappeared.[2]
As of October 2019, Smudge has nearly 800,000 Instagram followers where his handle has the epithets: "Hates vegetables," "Chunky yet funky," and "Meme lord." The cat also has a shop dedicated to its feline funkiness that sells pins, stickers, mugs, shirts and hoodies with Smudge inspired design. [2][3]
Becoming a Meme
On June 19th, 2018, Miranda posted a photograph of a white cat in front of a plate of vegetables, with the caption "he no like vegetals." It was well-received, but didn't quite blow up in popularity until a Twitter user named MISSINGEGIRL spliced the photo with an image of Taylor Armstrong in an argument on the set of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. After that the meme was thrown around everywhere. Smudge got so popular he was profiled in a Vice Magazine article called "We Are All Smudge the Cat, Confused in an Angry World."[2]
