Sivi dom

Sivi dom

Sivi dom ("Grey House" in English) is drama television series produced by Radio Television Belgrade (today's Radio Television of Serbia) and originally aired on Yugoslav Radiotelevision (JRT) network in 1986. It is made of 12 1-hour episodes with plot being set in reform school and deals with lives and everyday struggles of juvenile delinquents and the staff.

Series was written by renowned screenwriter Gordan Mihić, who claimed that he had found inspiration in Dostoyevsky's novel The House of the Dead. The series was shot between 1984 and 1985 in different locations, but the most important was and Education Reform Institute in Serbian city of Kruševac, which provided the series with additional authenticity. Director Darko Bajić later claimed that most of the immates were children caught for petty crimes, not different from the activities himself indulged one while growing up in "rough" Belgrade neighbourhood of Dorćol.

The series was known for its naturalistic style and dark atmosphere, but also created controversies for displaying sex, violence and other content deemed unsuitable for standards of 1980s Yugoslavia prime time television. Despite everything, series proved popular and served as springboard for careers of many young actors like Žarko Laušević and Nikola Kojo.

1988 feature film Zaboravljeni, which deals with same milieu and themes, is often referenced as the unofficial sequel of the series, later expanded into eponymous TV miniseries.
