Shelley Garland

Shelley Garland

Shelley Garland is the moniker for an unknown individual who used the name to contribute to the Huffington Post. The person created a fake back-story that Shelley was attaining her Master's Degree in Philosophy and in her free time is working towards smashing the patriarchy.

Article of Ending White Male Suffrage

On April 13th, Garland published her first piece in the Huffington Post titled Could It Be Time To Deny White Men The Franchise? In the article, Garland argues that since a large proportion of the world's wealth is in the hands of white males, it be redistributed to "their rightful owners" and the white males should not have the right to vote for 20 years. Her reasoning is that 500 years of colonialism, slavery, wars, and genocides that she blames on white men makes it only fair that action is taken.

Controversy and Retraction

The article received a massive response on social media and drew the ire of many conservatives.

Editor-in-Chief Verashni Pillay stood by Garland's work and said that the "underlying analysis about the uneven distribution of wealth and power in the world is pretty standard for feminist theory." [1]

The Huffington Post retracted the story two days later when it was revealed that the person who claimed to be Shelley Garland could be traced and appears not to exist.

Shelley has since been deleted as a contributor.
