Shamoya McKenzie was an 8th grader at the k-8 Graham School in Mount Vernon, New York. She was a rising star on the school's Basketball team.
Background
Shamoya was born and raised in New York. Her mother is an Account manager for Citi, and her father, who planned to retire next year to watch her daughter play the game of Basketball, lives in Florida. Growing up she had a fascination for the game of Basketball. She was considered a highly intelligent student who excelled academically in her studies.
Basketball
She was considered one of the city's brightest people, and also a great basketball player.
Her game style was usually to post as a Center and so also play the Power forward position. She was an eight grader at the k-8 Graham School and was playing on the junior varsity basketball team for Mount Vernon High School. Her goal was to be the star at the high school. The University of Connecticut showed interest in Shamoya. The 13 year-old had expressed that she wanted to play in the WNBA.
Shooting Accident
On December 31st, 2016, around 2:30 p.m., Shamoya rode in the backseat of a red Toyota on Pease street when gun shots rang out as the car moved along in a slow pace. Unintentionally, a stray bullet impacted her head. The vehicle she was in stopped on the junction of Chestnut Place and 3rd Street. The shooting accident made an impact throughout the entire community as she was considered one of the brightest young people in the town. [8]
Mount Vernon Police Department have informed the public in a number of press conferences that they have no suspect information, urging anyone with information to inform them.
The mayor of Mount Vernon, Richard Thomas expressed the following: “Today, Mount Vernon’s heart is not just heavy but it’s broken and to know that one of our youngest, aspiring scholars has succumb to senseless gun violence is just a real tragedy.”
Hugh Marriott, a pastor at the Allen Temple AME Church in Mount Vernon, spoke at the press conference and said his daughter played on the basketball team with McKenzie and called her one of the city’s brightest.
He expressed: “We have lost a bright, beautiful, young girl who had a lot of promise and represents the best of Mount Vernon”.
People such as David Newton, her coach in the Junior Varsity basketball team for Mount Vernon High School, expressed the following regarding her talent for the game of basketball: "She just loved to learn.
Spending time with her was just amazing.
She really influenced a lot of people."
