Shamilla Miller
Shamilla Miller
Shamilla Miller is a talented South African actress best known for her starring role as Ayesha Ibrahim, the underdog in a group of student friends living in Muizenberg, in the SABC 1 youth drama series Amaza. [2] She has had her hand in a few international (Zulu in 2013) and local films (i.e sonskyn beperk in 2016) . She appears in Netflix'sBlood and Water in 2020.
Early Life
The South Africa actress developed passion for acting since she was a kid in primary school.
"My passion for acting started when I was at primary school,” Miller says.
“When we as a family went out and rented movies, I always said I wanted to be in those movies at Mr Video.
As I grew older I realised that was called acting and I started dreaming about it.”
After her primary school education, she proceeded to Hottentots Holland High School in somerset west to further her studies but she did not study drama until she was in class 10. She matriculated from the HHH in 2005.
“That is where my career started to become something that was within reach, and this was the first step in my achievement,” Miller relays.
After matriculation, she went to film school, where mentors taught and guided her on the path to making acting her life.[3]
She furthered her studies and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Film and Live performance from AFDA, after which she spent a few years moulding her craft on stage with the likes of David Kramer and Alfred Rietman. She then teamed up with Vulture Productions where she was a part of five plays that went on to show at the Artscape and Grahamstown festival. [1]
Career
After a string of commercials, she landed her first lead television role in a youth drama series AMAZA where she played a young Muslim girl that had a strong passion for surfing. Shamilla had to learn how to surf (the basics) for the role very quickly after she fibbed about being able to in the casting. All worked out in the end though.
Forced love season two was a production where Shamilla played the sexy seductress in the show “its funny because I never get to play sexy characters for some reason so I had a lot of fun with this one” she says.
Shamilla appeared in a string of short films over the years. She was nominated for and won ‘best actress in a short film’ at the Mzanzi short film festival for her role in Nommer37. Since then Shamilla has been part of a few more Productions for TV like Top Actor Africa reality show, Isidingo, Zibondiwe, The Docket etc. She also played Athena – the goddess of wisdom and war in the BBC 8 part series Troy-fall of a city (2018) which was a big international series on Netflix. Next up for Miller was when she played the role of a teenage girl, Jenna Galloway (17), in The Girl From St. Agnes, an eight-part series now available on Showmax. It is a gripping murder mystery set at a prestigious all-girls boarding school in the Midlands.
