Dakota Access Pipeline Background

On October 9, 2016 a federal court rejected a request by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to halt work on the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The tribe says the project will destroy sacred grounds.

But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit struck down the request.

The $3.7 billion pipeline—slated to move almost half a million barrels of oil daily—is poised to move forward.

Its 1,170-mile stretch would come less than a mile from the tribe's reservation.
