McKay was Native American of the Sagkeeng First Nation.
McKay resided in Powerview-Pine Falls.
Death
On April 23, 2017, Serena's lifeless body was found near a home in the First Nation. She was last seen by a family friend on April 22, 2017, in the evening and was reported missing to Powerview RCMP on April 23, 2017 around 6 p.m.
A video uploaded to Facebook using the Facebook Live feature, was uploaded and went viral, in which she is violently assaulted by a pair of classmates.
Investigation
Her death was classified as a homicide on April 26, 2017. Two teenage girls, Lynnae Cook and Chrissy Jacobs, were arrested on second degree murder charges and are in custody.
