Early Life & Education

Sarah Riggs Amico grew up in the rural town of Joplin, Missouri, where she attended public school . Amico credits her family with teaching her the values of family, faith, education, hard work, serving others, and being a good neighbor. [1] [5]

Amico holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Washington and Lee University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School . [4] [3]

Sarah Riggs Amico is a practicing Christian who lives with her husband and two daughters in Marietta, Georgia. Amico chose to send her kids to public school in Cobb County, Georgia because she believes in Georgia's public education system. [1]

Career

Sarah Riggs Amico is currently the Executive Chairperson of Jack Cooper, a motor vehicle transport and logistics services company. Amico and her family bought the company while it was struggling during the 2008 financial crisis . Through the financial crisis – and the bankruptcies of two of their major customers – Amico and her family grew the company from 120 employees in 2008 to over 3,000 employees in 2018. As the Executive Chairperson of Jack Cooper, she learned that long-term growth and competitiveness come from investing in their people. In addition to paying for employees’ health care, Amico introduced initiatives to hire veterans, establish an annual Volunteer Day program, and provide paid parental leave, because she understands the dignity of work and what a good paying job, with great benefits, means to families. As Executive Chairperson, Amico's role includes overseeing the Company’s Board of Directors, Strategy, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Human Capital Development. Prior to her appointment by the Board as Executive Chairperson, Amico served as Vice Chairman of the Board. She has been a Director since 2011 and serves on the Board's Nominating and Governance Committee. [7]

Prior to joining Jack Cooper, Mrs. Amico worked as the Head of Strategic Planning at Agency for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, where she also launched and led the company's Entertainment Marketing & Brand Integration Department. During this time, she secured multi-party agreements amongst top content creators, marquis talent, large content distributors, and leading brands. Mrs. Amico began her tenure in media at the William Morris Agency in both Beverly Hills and New York City across a variety of departments, including The Mailroom Fund, a seed capital fund raised in partnership with AT&T, Venrock and Accel Partners. During her time in the entertainment industry, Amico worked on initiatives for some of the world's largest and most recognizable brands, including Time Inc., Reader's Digest, Amtrak, Harry & David, and Virgin America. Amico was previously the Head of Strategic Planning at Agency for the Performing Arts. She has also worked at The Mail Room Fund, a venture capital fund. Amico began her career as an Associate Director of Business Development at Solutions Inc. [3]

On December 6, 2017, Sarah Riggs Amico announced that she would running for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia. She decided to run because she was "tired of lame excuses from career politicians about why we can't invest in health care, education, and public safety while growing our economy at the same time." Sarah Riggs Amico defeated Triana Arnold James in the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia on May 22, 2018, winning 55.2% of the vote with 278,662 votes.

Her campaign has received the endorsements of notable Democrats including former President Barack Obama and Congressman John Lewis.

She has also received the endorsement of LGBTQ groups including Georgia Equality and Georgia Stonewall Democrats.

Political Views

Healthcare

Amico has said she wants to expand Medicaid but said it wasn’t the only solution to healthcare issues in Georgia. She said she also favors increasing the number of nurse practitioners in the state and expanding telemedicine, or interactions between doctors and patients through audio and video equipment. Education

Sarah Riggs Amico wants to update Georgia's funding formula for schools.

She also wants to see increased pay for teachers.

Amico wants to increase the availability of vocational and technical training in high schools and community colleges. [14] [13]

Business

Amico has said she opposes the “false choice” posed by politicians to either have growth or prosperity and said believes the state can do both.
