Sarah Gallo (The Five Foot Traveler)

Sarah Gallo (born May 22, 1992) is a travel blogger and consultant who documents her adventures on social media. As of August of 2017, Sarah has been to 82 countries and supports herself entirely by working remotely. In 2016, she was listed on the Matador Network's Top 16 female Instagram travelers as well as in The Huffington Post. She is originally from Redding, Connecticut.

Early Life and Education

Sarah grew up in Connecticut and her earliest travel memory is from 1997 scuba diving lessons, unknowingly with a double ear infection, in Punta Cana. She attended Joel Barlow High School where she had her own tutoring business and tutored two students multiple times a week in a range of subjects. Upon graduating high school in the top ten of her class, Sarah became a trained bartender and held the position as a side gig for several years before deciding to travel.

Sarah considers her first adventure in May of 2011 when her grandfather brought her to Paris and London as a high school graduation gift. For years, she had a fear of flying due the September 11th attacks. After much convincing, she went to hypnotherapy and after 3 sessions and conquered her fear of flight. She attended New York University and studied Media, Culture, and Communications. During her time at school, she studied abroad twice, first in Florence, Italy and then in Buenos Aires, and traveled extensively during those months. While back at NYU, Sarah was a Global Ambassador where she would educate prospective students about study abroad programs as well as a Global Storyteller, a travel blog which would lay the foundation for her "Five Foot Traveler" brand. She graduated Magna cum laude in 2013.

Career Beginnings

In August of 2013, Sarah graduated college early in order to study abroad in Argentina and spend time traveling South America.

Before traveling, she applied for a scholarship to blog about her experiences, and she won.

Sarah was required to write 30 blog posts to be distributed through out NYU, and would serve as the foundation The Five Foot Traveler.

Sarah knew she wanted to travel, but her time in South America confirmed that it was something that should be a huge portion of her life; she began documenting her travels on her blog and social media.

Upon graduating early from NYU, Sarah attempted to go to corporate route and earned a job offer at every interview she took in New York City. Sarah declined all of the offers, realizing that her heart was not with any job she applied for and that she could make more money bartending. After saving up for a few months, she went to Africa and months after that to East Asia and Japan. For three years, Sarah would switch between traveling the world for months at a time and taking gigs back in New York City including bartending, photography, and social media management. In 2016, Sarah built up her brand enough to focus on The Five Foot Traveler full-time. Today, she travels 11 months out of the year.

The Five Foot Traveler

The overall mission of The Five Foot Traveler was to encourage solo travel, especially among young adults.

With her expertise, Sarah provides a number of services to people and companies including creating travel itineraries, reviewing hotels and transportation services, and developing partnerships with companies.

In addition, Sarah is involved with affiliate marketing and helps teach other aspiring travel bloggers how to make a living by working remotely. In 2017, Sarah started traveling the country as a motivational speaker and shares her experiences and lessons with others.

Learning New Languages

When Sarah went to Florence, she took an intensive Italian class. With 8 years of French under her belt, she expected to pick up another Romance language easily. That was not the case, and she initially struggled with it in the first few weeks. Sarah decided to hold herself accountable and dedicated herself to mastering the language, learning basic phrases she needed on a day to day basis. Her strategy proved to be a success, and she applied it to future countries she ventured to such as Argentina, Brazil, and more.

Charity Work

Sarah's brother has cystic fibrosis, a chronic a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. She has raised money to various foundations and is developing her own program to help others inflicted with the disease. Sarah took her brother on a road trip through both the North and South Islands of New Zealand, something that was on his bucket list. Sarah is in the works of planning a program taking people with cystic fibrosis on bucket list travel experiences.
