Sam Beattie was a 24-year-old from Duxbury, Massachusetts.
Early Life and Education
He attended Duxbury High School and earned varsity letters in football and lacrosse. He graduated in 2010. Beattie attended the University of Denver and was on their was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Career
After graduating from college in 2014, Beattie worked as an analyst for IPS Strategic Capital and later UBS. He left his job in October of 2016 in order to take a gap year in Australia with his girlfriend, Michele Segalla. While in Australia, he worked remotely as a customer service representative for Popmarket.
Death
On December 6th, Beattie was camping with his girlfriend at Mt Warning at the border between Queensland and New South Wales in order to watch the sunrise the next morning. A severe lightning storm ravaged the area Monday night into Tuesday morning, and one bolt struck a tree next to their tent. The lightning surged through Beattie's feet and instantly killed him. His girlfriend suffered minor injuries to her neck and back when and was crying over the body of Beattie until two hikers spotted them. Their attempts to revive Beattie did not work.
