Ronnie Davis (Drag Racer)
Ronnie Davis (Drag Racer)
Ronnie Davis was a drag racer from Suwanee, Georgia.
He has been racing since the age of 18, and in the early stages of his career spent much of his time running in a heads-up racing program at the old Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway.
The category was called King of the Hill, and Davis earned his nickname by going undefeated for three and a half years.
In the late 1980s Davis discovered Top Sportsman and in the intervening years he became a driving force behind the class' rise to prominence as drag racing's quickest and fastest dial-in doorslammer category.
Death
In April 2016, Ronnie died in a crash.
He had completed a final qualifying run in the PDRA Spring Nationals when his 1963 Corvette turned left and shot across the track in front rival Mark Malcuit's car.
Davis' car cleared the right-side guardwall and barrel-rolled.
Davis was taken to Moore County Regional Hospital in Pinehurst and later to Unc Medical center - Chapel Hill.
