Ron Essett was 0-for-3 in major title bouts; he lost to World Boxing Council champ Mauro Galvano at the Palazzo Dello Sport in Capo d'Orlando, Sicily on July 27, 1991"It was close but I can't say we got robbed because Ron didn't do enough to take the title away," said manager Tom Rothe. Essett ran into a weight problem at the end of training and was actually out running when he was scheduled to be at the pre-fight weigh-in.[9] Essett challenged for the World Boxing Association super middleweight title against Baek In-chul at the Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul, South Korea and lost by TKO in the eleventh round.

Nicknamed "The Dragon",Ron Essett began his professional career in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1984 with a win over Carl Dixon. He competed for the last time in 1997 in losing by disqualification to Norbert Nieroba. He defeated Robbie Sims at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa, Florida on June 26, 1990. He defeated Pierre-Frank Winterstein on March 7,1992. Winterstein had a professional record of 50 wins and 2 losses at the time of being stopped.
Ron Essett defeated Sanderline Williams,Juan Carlos Giménez and Dave Tiberi.He defeated Williams for the NABF middleweight title on October 18, 1988. Essett had a draw with Doug DeWitt.DeWitt held the WBO middleweight title in 1989 and 1990 before losing it to Nigel Benn. Tiberi lost a disputed decision for the IBF middleweight title against James Toney in 1992.Essett lost by unanimous decision to Chris Eubank on July 27, 1992 in Almancil,Portugal; his bout with Eubank was for the World Boxing Organization super middleweight title.

Essett was a North American amateur champion and National Golden Gloves Champion.[11] He competed in an amateur bout in 1983 against Mark Breland that was highly anticipated and still talked about 37 years later. Breland went on to win the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
