Rolfe Winkler
Rolfe Winkler is an American journalist who covers venture capital and startups for The Wall Street Journal. [4][2]
Education
Rolfe graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in Economics. [5]
Career
Rolfe started his career as a licensed Chartered Financial Analyst. He worked for Matador Capital Management where he focused on internet and media as an analyst for the $500 million hedge fund. [6]
In 2009, he started writing as a columnist for Thomson Reuters. He spent most of the time blogging about finance, economics and markets. He later became a writer for the "Heard on the street" column at The The Wall Street Journal for a few years. Since 2013 he has covered an extensive range of topics at The Wall Street Journal surrounding finance and tech, especially where they intersect in Silicon Valley. [6]
Calling Out PewDiePie
In 2017, Winkler enraged the PewDiePie community when he published an article called "PewDiePie, Nazi?" where he questions whether PewDiePie is anti-semitic, or whether he is trying to push the envelope with his humor after he paid two men to hold up a sign saying "Death To All Jews". A petition surfaced to have Winkler fired but it was closed and nothing came of it. [7][10]
Disney cut ties with PewDiePie shortly after the article, prompting PewDiePie's team to claim that the anti-semitic content was taken out of context. A year later, The Wall Street Journal was hacked with the message "apologize to PewDiePie." [8] [9]
