After graduating from high school in 1973, Roger Self became a police officer with the Gaston County Sheriff's Office working there for two years. He then worked in the loss prevention department of Belk, a regional department store.
Years later, Self was inspired to start his own company, Southeastern Loss Management Inc, after a chance meeting with a multimillionaire business owner, Mark Fulenwider during a rotary club meeting.
“He said you need to be in business for yourself, young man,” Self said.
“I don’t have no money.
I lived paycheck to paycheck.
I had never run a business in my life.
He said, ‘But I have.’ Those were his words.”
Mark Fulenwider, gave Self an opportunity to take care of loss prevention for the restaurant franchises he owned.
He recommended another person who could give him contract work, and Self figured he could make more money than he had at Belk.
With the help of a business partner, Robert Stacy, Roger Self opened his private investigation and loss prevention firm, Southeastern Loss Management Inc in 1989.
Self bought Stacy’s share of the company back in 2003 becoming the sole owner and president of the business.
He also moved the business after purchasing office space closer to his home in Dallas, North Carolina.
