Early Life & Education
Robert-Jan den Haan holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Industrial Design Engineering from University of Twente. He is currently a Ph.d. candidate at the same institution, researching the use of gaming to aid decision-making in the self-sustaining of Dutch rivers. 
den Haan is associated with RiverCare, a research program which aims to better understand the fundamental processes that drive eco-morphological changes in rivers and predict its intermediate and long-term developments; they cooperate with knowledge institutes, consultancies and government organizations with similar efforts.
Robert-Jan den Haan is a professional cyclist and trainer. When he was 26 years old, den Haan cycled professionally for the Oldenzaalse Wieler Club (OWC Oldenzaal - AFMI) in 2013. In 2014, he competed in the Zuid Oost Drenthe Classic, a road bicycle race held annually in the Netherlands.
While in pursuit of his Ph.D., den Haan has been working as an independent freelance journalist. As a researcher, he has been exploring the blockchain industry to learn more about how he and his team can create more collaborative approaches towards caring for Dutch rivers. He has written for The Block  and Bitcoin Magazine .
