On September 7, 2016, at about 2:30 a.m., Patel fell overboard from the 11th deck of the cruise ship Carnival Ecstasy. U.S. Coast Guard crews are searching the waters southwest of The Bahamas to locate her.

She was seen by witnesses aboard the ship wearing a white dress with a pink floral print when she was spotted going overboard.
