Resham Khan was an aspiring model until she became a victim of a Hate crime Acid attack in east London on 21st June during Resham's 21st birthday. ^{[3] [6] [10] [6]}

It happened at 9.15am on June 21, in east London in the neighbouring borough of Newham. ^{[6] [5] [3] [10]}She was stopped at a traffic light in Beckton, London, with cousin Jameel Muhktar when a man threw a corrosive substance through an open window. ^{[7] [6] [3] [10]}

Resham Khan was left her with burns across her face and body and her cousin, Jameel Muhktar, 37, in an Induced coma. ^{[7] [6] [3] [10]}

She had recently returned from nine months in Cyprus and had planned to go to a spa and restaurant with her mum for her birthday, but was instead left in extreme pain as the acid burnt through their clothes and skin causing them to crash and then desperately seek help from strangers. Her friends have since started a fundraising campaign to raise money for the specialist therapy the pair will need going forward. ^[7]

Police initially said they had no evidence the attack was racially or religiously motivated.

They reclassified it as a Hate crime, however, after Jameel Muhktar insisted Islamophobia was involved. ^{[6] [6]}

The police also found posts expressing sympathy for the far-right on the Facebook page of John Tomlin, 24, the man behind the acid attack. ^[6]He is a white man, around 6ft tall of stocky build with short fair hair and distinctive tattoos of tear drops on his face, known to frequent the Canning Town area. ^[10]
