Reinhold Hanning
Reinhold Hanning (Age 94) was a former Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) Guard at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps in Germany from 1942-1944.
Trial and Conviction
In early 2016, Hanning sat trial in the western German city of Detmold for the crimes he committed during his time as an SS Guard.
Hanning was found guilty of being an accessory to the murder of at least 170,000 people and was sentenced to five years in prison.
During his trial, Hanning apologised multiple times: "I want to say that it disturbs me deeply that I was part of such a criminal organisation, I am ashamed that I saw injustice and never did anything about it and I apologise for my actions.
I am very, very sorry."
