Rayshard Brooks was a 27-year-old African American male who was shot and killed by an Atlanta Police Department officer in the parking lot of a Wendy's on June 12, 2020. [1] [2] [3]
Death
Responding police from the Atlanta Police Department gave Brooks a field sobriety testing, which he failed. He resisted arrest and struggled with officers. Surveillance video shows Brooks running away with what appears to be the officer's taser. According to the video, Brooks ran the length of about five to seven parking spaces before turning around and pointing the taser at the officer. [1]
Brooks was taken to a hospital, where he died.
One officer was treated for an injury and released.
Officer Garrett Rolfe (Police Officer) was identified as one of the officers involved in the shooting. [9]
Aftermath
On Saturday June 13, 2020, protesters in Atlanta took to the streets this weekend calling for action following Brooks' death.
Atlanta's police chief, Erika Shields, resigned following the shooting. [6].
