Rania Al-Mashat

Dr. Rania Al-Mashat (Arabic: د. رانيا المشاط) serves as Minister of Tourism of the Arab Republic of Egypt, in the government headed by Prime minister Sherif Ismail and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Al-Mashat is the first woman to hold the position [1], and was sworn in on 14 January 2018.

Career

Al-Mashat worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC from 2001 to 2005, after which she returned to her native Egypt to serve as Sub-Governor for Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Egypt. In 2016 Al-Mashat rejoined the IMF as a Senior Advisor to the Chief Economist.

Education

Al-Mashat earned a BA in Economics from The American University in Cairo (1995), and an MA (1998) and PhD (2001) in the same subject from the University of Maryland College Park where her thesis advisor was Carmen Reinhart.
