Pikes Peak National Cemetery is a 374-acre Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemetery located in the southeast portion of Colorado Springs,Colorado.

It is located off of Drennan Road.The

cemetery will serve the burial needs of more than 200,000 veterans,their spouses and eligible family members for the next one hundred years. The

Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) National Cemetery Administration maintains 135 national cemeteries in 40 states (and Puerto Rico) as well as 33 soldier's lots and monument sites.These sites

range from than a half acre to more than 1,000 acres in size.

In 2009,Congressman Doug Lamborn introduced house bill HR 3219.The bill passed and the Colorado legislature promised to build a national cemetary in Colorado.In 2014,land was purchased for 4.5 million dollars.In 2017,the Veterans Affairs approved a 31 million dollar contract to build the cemetary.Randy Reeves,the VA undersecretary of memorial affairs,stated in 2017:

It is our job to make sure that are veterans are remembered forever.They

will have a burial option within 75 miles of their home.

Development

The initial phase of construction developed approximately 65 acres and provide for approximately 13,300 gravesites,accommodating both casketed and cremated remains.In

addition to gravesites,the cemetery includes other features such as a front entrance off Drennan Road,an administration building,a maintenance building,a flag pole assembly area,a memorial walkway,committal shelters,and a public information center with electronic gravesite locator and restrooms.Other cemetery

infrastructure features include roads,landscaping,utilities and irrigation.

The cemetery was officially dedicated on May 25,2018 and the first burials took place on November 1,2018 in the Early Turn-over Area (ETO) area of the cemetery.They

accept casketed and cremated remains for in-ground burial only.They will

have additional burial options available to include columbarium niches.Several burials take

place daily.

The current qualifications to be buried at Pikes Peaks National Cemetary are that the deceased must have served on active duty in the United States military and can not have recieved a dishonorable military discharge.
