Permutation Ventures was founded in September 2014 by Riva-Melissa Tez and Peter Bruce-Clark.

Tez had been looking to start a fund focusing on artificial intelligence and machine learning as a transhumanism advocate and entrepreneur.

She reached out to Bruce-Clark who had been researching innovative financing models at Stanford University.

Together they saw a market gap for better due diligence tools as well as a gap in the provision of services geared to assist early-stage development of AI companies.

To remedy this issue they started by building tools for investing in the space, they also began incubating and investing in early stage AI and machine learning companies.
