Pepe Cash (ticker symbol: PEPECASH) is a cryptocurrency. It was first announced on September 14, 2016 and the development team is located in Japan. As of December 28th 2017, the circulating supply was 701,884,009 PEPECASH.

Pepe the Frog is an internet meme built on a character by Matt Furie which first appeared online via Matt's Myspace page in 2005. Its unusual longevity and contentious use in representing various ideologies led to a near-endless series of iterations wherein depictions of Pepe have become ironically posited as "rare."

It is the phenomenon of theserare Pepesthat has raised the meme itself to the level of a digital commodity. Rare Pepes are similar to collectible trading cards which are produced in limited quantities to boost their desirability. Rather than producing actual physical cards the limited virtual quantity and ownership of units is validated on the Bitcoin blockchain. These transactions are made with the online wallet, Pepe Cash is used in their purchase. The authenticity of each card "must be certified by the Rare Pepe Foundation."

Pepe Cash's early success builds on the legitimacy of Dogecoin, another meme-based cryptocurrency which has successfully modeled the ability of niche online culture in taking a foothold in a real-world use case. The object of using Pepe Cash and trading/collecting rare Pepes is purely for entertainment purposes and celebrating meme culture, however its rise in value has led to others investing in them with only profit as motivation.

The official icon for the currency (which is also a collectible card) depicts Pepe wearing a garish purple hat (consistent with attire synonymous with pimps) and aviator sunglasses while standing in front of a McMansion which has three Lambourghinis parked in front of it - all symbols of new and rapidly acquired wealth. Below this image on the card it is stated: "The Pepe Cash card is useful for buying houses, fast cars and yachts."
