Paul Colgan is a publisher, editor, and entrepreneur based out of Sydney, Australia with more than 20 years of experience in journalism. He is currently the Publisher and Editor-in-chief of Business Insider Australia.

Early Life

Paul Colgan was born in Dublin, Ireland but grew up in Laytown, County Meath which at the time was a culchie or rural area but is now more like a suburb of Dublin.

Paul Cogan worked a couple of years in Ireland before going on a backpacking trip to Australia and then permanently moving there.

Colgan did some freelance journalism, bartending, and busking in Perth before moving to Sydney to meet up with some friends and look for full-time work.

Personal Life

Paul Colgan enjoys rock music, decent food, and watching rugby, especially when the Australia national rugby union team known as the Wallabies plays the Ireland national rugby union team.

Education

In 2008, Paul Colgan graduated from the Australian Graduate School of Leadership with a Graduate Certificate in Management and Business Administration. [1]

Paul Colgan graduated with a Master of Arts in Journalism from the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) with first class honours in 1999. At DIT, he founded a new student newspaper, The DIT Examiner which followed the tabloid newspaper format. [1]

In 1998, Colgan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Classical Civilisation from University College Dublin with honours. While at the college, Cogan was the Auditor/Chairman of the Rock Music Society and also taught guitar. During his final year of study, his specialties included the Fall of the Roman Republic (60 to 50 BC) and Seamus Heaney's early writing. [1]

Career

In 2013, Paul Colgan launched Business Insider in Australia, serving as the website's Publisher and Editor-in-chief. Australia was the first overseas edition Business Insider. Under Colgan's guidance Business Insider Australia grew significantly, by 2016 the site was reaching more than a million unique Australians each month.

From 2012-2013, Colgan was the Network News Director of News Corp Australia managing all of their digital properties including Australia's biggest website, news.com.au and metropolitan websites including the Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, and Courier-Mail. From 2010-2012, Colgan was the Editor of news.com.au. Colgan also founded The Punch, a real-time political commentary website at News Corp Australia in 2009, serving as its Managing Editor. [1]

Colgan was the Deputy Editor of News Digital Media from 2006-2009 and the Chief of Staff of the company from 2005-2006. During his time as Deputy Editor he covered major events, including the 2004 and 2007 federal Australian elections, the 2008 Olympics and the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, a Walkley Awards-winning project. Colgan was a Lecturer at the University of Sydney from 2005-2006. He taught Masters in Journalism and Masters in Professional Communication degrees courses. He also taught a units in writing for the media, covering information gathering, fact-checking, planning, writing and structuring articles. [1]

From 1999-2002, Colgan was a Lecturer at his alma mater, the University College Dublin teaching Masters in Journalism courses. Colgan was a feature writer, sub-editor, and page designer at The Drogheda Independent from 1997-1999. [1]
