On November 6, 2016, Sergeant Patrick Sondron and another officer were responding to call near Byron, Georgia.

Two people were riding ATVs when a disgruntled neighbor walked outside and threatened them with a firearm.

After calling the authorities, Sergeant ^[5]Sondron and another officer arrived at the scene and interviewed the victims before confronting the armed man at his home.

When the officers were walking up his driveway, the man opened fire on them, fatally wounding Sondron while afflicting severe injuries to the other officer.

The victims who witnessed the event immediately called the authorities again to report the shooting.

When they responded, they opened fire on the assailant, wounding him and taking him into custody.
