Shastry graduated from St. Andrews Episcopal Chapel in 2009. She then attended University of St. Andrews from 2009-2013, where she received a Master of Arts in international relations. ^{[2] [1]}

Prior to joining CNN, Shastry worked on the acclaimed documentary series This is Life with Lisa Ling, and Vice News. ^{[1] [2]}

She joined Vice News prior to its launch in the Fall of 2013, and helped produce over 100 news documentaries, focusing on the conflict in Ukraine. ^{[3] [1]}
