Natasha S. Alford is an award-winning on-camera host, Journalist, writer and Producer driven by the power of storytelling to inspire and change people’s lives. [1]

Education

A native of Syracuse, New York, Natasha graduated from city schools and developed a passion for writing, public speaking and poetry when she was 9 years old, after winning her first oratory competition. Natasha earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism (MSJ ‘14), and a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in Social Studies (‘08).

Career

As the Vice President of Digital Content for The Grio digital network, Natasha leads strategic creative vision and production for all original video content on The Grio.

She is also a Senior Correspondent for The Grio covering social issues including criminal justice reform, education, politics and culture.

Natasha is known for her dynamic on-camera interviews where she’s probed the minds of prominent figures such as Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Senator Cory Booker, Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Gloria Steinem and more.

At TheGrio, Natasha is host and creator of the original video series “True Story with Natasha Alford,” where she goes into the field to report untold stories impacting black America.

Alford's writing and on-air commentary has appeared on The Grio for four years during her tenure as Deputy Editor, as well as numerous other outlets from The New York Times to NBCNews.com to The Breakfast Club.

A former educator, Alford has also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in visual journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at City University of New York.

Prior to theGrio, Natasha was a general assignment news reporter at WROC-TV (News 8) in Rochester, NY.

There she chronicled the local rise of Black Lives Matter, the plight of the homeless community and stories of domestic violence survivors.

Before her career in journalism, Natasha worked at the investment management firm Bridgewater Associates, LP, eventually leaving to become a middle school English teacher in Washington, D.C. through Teach For America. Honors and Awards

Named “Emerging Journalist of the Year” by the National Association of Black Journalists in 2018, Natasha S. Alford is a 2019 Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting grantee for her series on race, policing, and identity called: “A Revolution for Puerto Rico’s Afro-Latinos.”

Other honors include being a 2019 Maynard 200 Fellow, and a 2017 Harvard Women’s Leadership Award recipient.

Alford's TEDx talk "The Courage to Report" detailed her experience as a TV news reporter in the era of digital media and Black Lives Matter.

Personal

She currently resides in New York City and devotes her free time to mentoring aspiring journalists and students, through The OpEd Project.
