Heroic Death
On July 7th, 2016, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) suicide bombers disguised as local militia tried to storm the Sayyid Muhammad bin Ali al-Hadi mausoleum in the city of Baladone of Iraq’s main Shia shrines in the most serious attack on a holy site since the destruction of another such shrine a decade ago sparked the country’s sectarian war.
According to a Joint Operations spokesman in Iraq, the attack caused 70 injuries.
Instead of hundreds dying, only 37 were killed because of the heroic actions of a single Muslim man.
The bombers, aided by gunmen, fought through a marketplace in Balad to the Sayyid Muhammad bin Ali al-Hadi mausoleum where they blew themselves up near its main gates.
Iraqi officials claim the Thursday night attack was the most brazen attempt yet by Isis to reignite sectarian chaos.
