Most (Povratak otpisanih)

Most ("The Bridge" in English) is the twelfth episode of the drama television series Povratak otpisanih, originally aired on Yugoslav Radiotelevision network (JRT) on March 19th 1978. The plot takes place during the end of battle of Belgrade and German retreat, when the resistance is trying to prevent the enemy from blowing up strategically important Old Sava Bridge. The episode is notable as the only one in the series with the plot explicitly based on actual historic event.

Plot

In the cold opening General von Friedrichs is talking with Gestapo Major Krieger in General's luxurious suite, just as the battle reaches climax. General receives news that Partisans and Red Army have penetrated German defence lines and immediately orders pullout to reserve position. While Friedrichs is aware of the loss and prepares to evacuate with his mistress Anđela, Krieger tells him that he will stay in Belgrade and try to turn tables on his adversaries by organising underground resistance movement of his own and prepare for eventual return of German troops.

Zaharije S. Jovanović, middle-aged Belgrade teacher and World War I veteran, has ambigous feeling about battle that is nearing its end. On one hand, he is delighted with upcoming end of despised German occupation, while he is deeply unhappy with the fact that he didn't anything to fight it. His wife Milka tells him that the others did their part for him and Zaharije has to settle to walking to the street and simply watching Germans how they flee across the bridge over Sava River.

Partisan headquarters has correctly assumed that the Germans want to blow up the bridge.

Stana gives orders to Prle and Tihi to organise their men and prevent it; she will "borrow" them an engineer specialised in defusing explosives, but Tihi and Prle know that they have very difficult task, because they must approach heavily defended bridge from the open ground.

In the meantime, Joca returns to his home and wife Lenče, deliberately choosing to do so in his old postman's uniform.

Later, Tihi brings news to Mrki and Marija about Partisans reaching Kalemegdan, which makes it likely that the city will be completely liberated next day, but their mood slightly darkens when they hear about their next task, which is obviously the most difficult and dangerous so far.

Zaharije, while going out, discovers wires and later explosives in the basement of the apartment building where he lives.

Using his experience of a WW1 sapper he has the explosive devices defused. But this only brings him idea to try to do the same thing with nearby bridge.

Prle devises plan to approach the bridge with diversionary attack on German troops guarding the bridge, which would allow Tihi and engineer Milan to inspect the bridge and defuse the explosives.

Zaharije has approached his friend to help him with defusing explosives on the bridge.

The man agrees to lend him his boat but refuses to go himself, telling it is simply too dangerous.

Zaharije reluctantly decides to go alone.

As General von Friedrichs orders full retreat and subsequent destruction of bridge as soon as all surviving German troops move across, Mrki is with Španac and Pavle.

Two men are in good spirits, singing, drinking and reminiscing about the Spanish Civil War experiences before Mrki tells them to go to post office and try to find explosives which they are ordered to defuse. Two men ultimately find the the post empty, but also discover explosives which they defuse, successfully completing the mission.

Tihi and his group has more difficult task.

Even wife of engineer Milan Damjanović, to whom he told tales about going to fix friends' power installations, knows that her husband is going to something dangerous.

Marija admits her feelings to Tihi before he is about to go to mission.

Zaharije in the same time goes to what he tells Milka to be just another evening stroll.

Unbeknownst to her, he had taken axe and some tools and had them hidden under his coat.

He successfully reaches the bridge and clims on one of its pillars.

Prle brings his group near bridge in the truck driven by Prle's old associate Cane "Kurbla".

Cane asks to take direct participation in the diversiontary raid.

Prle and his men attack Germans according to the plan, and it works, allowing Tihi and engineer Damjanović to approach bridge.

As the gunfight rages on, both men are surprised to see wires cut and explosive at the bridge defused.

General von Friedrichs orders the bridge to be blown up, even with large number of his troops being trapped on the right bank; the bridge nevertheless stands.

Zaharije returns to his wife Milka and tells her what he has done and asking to help him celebrate with a glass of slivovitz.

Prle drives wounded Cane after the mission and commends his bravery in the raid.

Cane dies after that.

Historical Basis

Character of Zaharije S. Jovanović was based on the historical personality of Miladin Zarić, who was, just like his fictional counterpart, a teacher and veteran of Balkan Wars and WW1, where he gained valuable experience as a combat engineer. The details of his feat were, however, even more dramatic than depicted in the episode. Zarić had been carefully observing Germans setting up explosives on the bridge for a month before the final battle and knew exactly where to cut the fuse. When he did so, he did in the middle of the fighting, using assistance of group of Red Army soldiers and taking a pickaxe from the dead German soldier. [2]

Trivia

Most is the only episode of the series (including Otpisani) which features explicit nude scene. It is part of the cold opening when General von Friedrichs discusses evacuation with her mistress while she takes a bath.
