Montell2099 whose birth name is Montell Pinny is a rising electronic beat-maker and Songwriter. He is a native of Katikati, a rural town on New Zealand's North Island.[1]
Background
Montell2099 grew up in Te Rereatukahia Pa, a town in Katikati, New Zealand with a population under 5000. The environment did not offer much in music because it was an isolated small Community.
When you grow up in a place like that, you can't even really dream.
I was pretty content staying in Katikati and picking Kiwifruit," Pinny says. "That's what all of my mates were doing. I didn't have any ambitions at the time.
He started making music in his grandparents house around 2011 when his grandfather sorted him out with FL Studio to actualize his creativity. Fed up, his grandfather George Burt pushed Pinny into the spare room of their home, sat him down at a computer, and opened up the music-making programme FL Studio, also known as Fruity Loops.
He was mostly thrilled and motivated listening to the likes of Drake.
I was listening to a lot of Drake’s early stuff so the producers he was messing with like 40, Boi-1da and T-Minus were big influences.
The real melancholic stuff was what I gravitated towards the most.
I used to love the outros that 40 would do when he’d filter everything down and have a lead or vocals take the wheel.
It gave me the idea of creating a ‘feeling’ with the music rather than just making a beat.[2]
Music Career
Montell has been producing beats for almost 8 years and his biggest breakthrough was in his collaboration with Salvage 21 in 2017 in a song titled "Hunnid On The Drop," a standalone single from the Red Bull Sound Select series, which was released 30th of June, 2017.
The New Zealand-based producer is largely beat-focused, as his output nuzzles up cozily next to the likes of the Team Supreme and Soulection crews, both of whom have publicly and consistently voiced their support of the 23-year-old creative.
When asked to elaborate on his own sounds, he says his music “tickles your ears” and “makes your brain all fuzzy.”
He attributes this to his manipulation of bass tracks which often flood the background, acting as non-primary yet critical components of his final records.
This tickling effect comes through in many of Montell’s standout tracks like “ctrl,” “chillin,” and “space,” which span from bassline-heavy to crisply textured to celestial & arpeggiated, respectively.[3]
In 2019, Montell Pinny played more than 50 shows across America, the scattershot tour took him everywhere from Seattle to San Francisco, Atlanta to Orlando, and Houston to Jacksonville, spreading his brand of moody, ethereal, bass-driven trap to as many ears as he could, but his New York City experience was special to him.
He recently released FORCES, his first EP for the record label Sable Valley.
He signed on after being headhunted by the label's boss, the trap producer RL Grime.[4] In July he's performing at Belgium's Tomorrowland, one of the world's biggest music festivals, with 400,000 punters attending across two weekends. It will almost certainly be Pinny's biggest crowd to date.
