Monmouth University

Monmouth University

Monmouth University is one of the most reputable, private, higher learning institutes not only within the United States, but the whole world.

With a teacher-to-student ratio of only 14:1, each student is able to receive an experience like no other.

Because of the university's relatively small student population, class sizes are capped between 20 and 35 and no classes are taught by teaching assistants.

Currently a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and also ranked 379 in the "Best Colleges" list at the Princeton Review.

From Monmouth Junior College, to Monmouth College, and, finally, to Monmouth University, our alma mater continues to grow, evolve and achieve new levels of excellence nearly eight decades since its founding.

Monmouth University is about energy, enthusiasm, and opportunity.

It offers students a well-rounded and bold academic environment with abundant opportunity for growth—personal, professional, and social as they prepare to become leaders in their chosen fields.

Monmouth was founded in 1933 to provide opportunity for higher education to area high school graduates who, in those Depression-era days, could not afford to go away to college.

It was a two-year institution, holding classes only in the evening.

Support from students and the community enabled the fledgling College to persevere and quickly assume its present private status.

In 1956, Monmouth College was accredited by the state to offer four-year programs leading to the baccalaureate degree.

Less than a decade later, it was authorized to offer master's degree programs.

In March 1995, the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education granted Monmouth university status.

Today Monmouth University offers 32 undergraduate and 24 graduate degree programs and a multitude of certificate programs.

The University has been steadfast in its ongoing transformation as a first-choice destination school by progressively raising admission criteria for incoming students and enhancing the quality of its academic programs.

Within its student body, 31 states and 34 foreign nations are represented.

More than 1,600 undergraduates are resident students who enjoy a challenging learning environment on a campus that blends classic beauty with the latest technology.

Monmouth continues to build upon its achievements by providing dynamic, first-tier, personalized education that empowers students to reach their full potential as leaders and make significant contributions to their community and society.

The centerpiece of the Monmouth University campus is Wilson Hall.

Originally, it was the site of the Shadow Lawn mansion, constructed in 1903 and housed 52 rooms.

United States President Woodrow Wilson stayed in the mansion during his campaign in summer of 1916.

After Shadow Lawn was destroyed by a fire in 1927, the building that would become Wilson Hall was built as a residence for Mr & Mrs. Hubert Templeton Parson.

Mr. Parson was the former head of F.W.

Woolworth Company The building was designed by Horace Trumbauer and Julian Abele.

Abele is regarded as the first professional African American architect.

Wilson Hall became municipal property during the Great Depression and until Monmouth University acquired ownership, it was home to Highland Manor Junior College, a private girls' school.

Today, it is a National Historic Landmark.

Some classrooms and the administrative offices are inside of the building.

In 1980, Wilson Hall was used as Daddy Warbucks' mansion in the film version of Annie.

Wilson Hall was named to the National Register of Historic Places on March 28, 1978 under the name Shadow Lawn.

It was named a National Historic Landmark on February 4, 1985.

Wilson Hall has also been a host of the classic movie Annie, starring Aileen Quinn in 1982.

Some of the scenes in this movie were filmed inside and outside of the building along with the rest of the Monmouth University Campus.
