Miodrag Palošević

Miodrag Palošević

Miodrag Palošević (1901 - 1945) was Serbian and Yugoslav military officer, known as one of the close associates of Chetnik leader Draža Mihailović in World War II.

Palošević grew up in family whose members belonged to the Serbian Chetnik Organization, paramilitaries involved in Macedonian Struggle in the beginning of 20th Century. His own military career began in First World War when he as a 15-year old boy began to follow Royal Serbian Army during its retreat through Albania. He joined unit commanded by former Chetnik leader Vojin Popović at Macedonian Front but was later transferred to France to finish formal education. After the war he was among the first graduates of Military Academy and joined Royal Yugoslav Army where he would advance to the rank of major.

In 1940, shortly before the war, he volunteered as an officer in newly-founded Assault (or Chetnik) units, intended for guerrilla warfare in case of Axis invasion. He was given command of 1st Assault Battallion with headquarters in Novi Sad. When invasion of Yugoslavia occured in April, his Battallion was retreating towards Bosnia and took part in heavy fighting with German armour units near Bijeljina, suffering heavy casualties in the process. While most of his unit surrendered, Palošević with few soldiers managed to get to Bosnian mountains and eventually got in touch with Colonel Mihailović.

During uprising in Serbia few months later, Palošević took part in fighting together with Communist-led Partisans who were initially Chetnik allies. In Summer 1942 Mihailović named him Inspector General of Yugoslav Army in Fatherland (JVUO), and in 1943 he became commander of Valjevo Corps. Later he became commandant of Chetnik officers' school in village of Ba.

Following Partisan takeover of Serbia in 1944, Palošević followed Mihailović in Bosnia.

In Spring 1945 he took part in Chetniks' last major operation of the war - attempt to return to Serbia and start massive anti-Communist uprising. Palošević was given command of middle column of Chetnik 4,000 strong force. Between May 10th and 13th, those forces were destroyed by Partisan forces in Battle of Zelengora. Palošević died on the last of day of battle, fighting Partisans in an attempt to cross river Sutjeska.
