Michael Mernack is a resident of Rockford, Illinois. He fatally shot Rebecca Finkenhofer early on December 28, 2016, at an apartment in the 1000 block of Minns Drive in Machesney Park, Illinois. ^[1]

On December 28, 2016, Rebecca was defending her grandmother and 6-year-old sister from a robbery at their apartment on the 1000 block of Minns Drive in Machesney Park, Illinois. The intruder was identified later as her mother's ex-boyfriend, Michael Mernack. ^[1] At first, Rebecca forced Mernack out of the house and they were fighting outside. Mernack then shot her on the walkway to the apartment, fatally wounding her. ^[1]

He was shot by responding officers at the scene, and taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
