Early Life & Education
From Northern Ireland
Culbert was born in Carrickfergus but moved to Massachusetts as a child. He attended Brockton High School.
Amateur Career
Fought Micky Ward
He boxed Micky Ward three times as an amateur and won the Golden Gloves held in Lowell, Massachusetts.
The southpaw recalled:
It was a dream.
It was so long ago, coming up on 24 years now, and I still sometimes don’t believe it.
I started watching boxing when I was 10 or 11.
Professional Career
Fought Roberto Duran
Michael Culbert boxed professionally from 1988 to 2006 and finished professional boxing record of 30 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw with six winning coming by knockout.
He boxed in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions.
He boxed against Roberto Durán in 1996 and lost. Duran is considered by many to be an all time great. He holds pro wins over Dave Hamilton, Jerald Lowe, Glen Burnett, and Khalif Shabbaz. He boxed at the Memorial Hall, Hynes Convention Center and TD Garden.
On ESPN Classic
Culbert's bouts have been broadcast on ESPN Classic. He has worked as a boxing trainer and as a journalist for The Grueling Truth. Culbert also trained at South Shore Boxing and had many of his professional boxing matches at the Whitman Armory in Whitman, Massachusetts.
